Reports: Anti-Georgian Campaign Waning in Russia
The scale of the fight against ?Georgian criminality? is declining in Russia and most of the Georgian-owned casinos and restaurants that were closed down have already been reopened, the Russian daily Vedomosti reported on October 25.
The Vedomosti said that two casinos that were shut down in Moscow, the Golden Palace and Golden Palace Weekend, and three casinos in St. Petersburg, Olympia, Konti and Nevada, are already packed with gamblers again.
?The number of deported Georgian illegal migrants has also decreased? The total number of deportees reached 800. Currently there are less than 100 people in detention [awaiting deportation],? according to the newspaper.
The Vedomosti quoted an unnamed Kremlin source as saying that the decision about the anti-Georgian campaign was mainly based on ?emotions.?
?Now there is an understanding that the pressure should be softened. This decision has already been taken,? the Kremlin source told the Vedomosti.
But the newspaper also says that economic sanctions are not likely to be lifted in the near future.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on October 23 that lifting sanctions is not yet planned.
