President Saakashvili’s ruling National Movement party won overwhelming majority of seats all the local council – Sakrebulos throughout Georgia in the October 5 municipal elections.
Results in the Abasha constituency in western Georgia were annulled because of grave violations during the elections day. As a result repeat elections in Abasha will be held on October 17. A total of 68 Sakrebulos [69th is Abasha Sakrebulo] were elected as a result of the October 5 elections.
According to the Central Election Commission, National Movement garnered a total of 77,08% of votes throughout Georgia; coalition of Republicans and Conservatives – 8,57%; Labor Party – 6,42%; Industrialist Party – 3,79%; Georgia’s Way – 1%. A small group Party of National Ideology garnered 0,02% of votes only in Tbilisi.
Overcoming of 4% threshold was needed to occupy at least one seat in the Tbilisi Sakrebulo and 5% threshold – in the provincial constituencies outside Tbilisi.
An election bloc formed by the Republican and Conservative parties occupied at least one seat in a total of 39 Sakrebulos throughout Georgia.
Labor Party will have seats in a total of 32 Sakrebulos and Industrialist Party will occupy at least one seat in a total of 17 Sakrebulos.
Ex-Foreign Minister Salome Zourabichvili’s party Georgia’s Way failed to garner enough votes in any of the constituency throughout Georgia to occupy at least one seat in the local municipalities.
Race for the seats in six provincial Sakrebulos were non-competitive with only one party – National Movement – running.
Voter turnout in Tbilisi was 33,98% and in the rest of Georgia 51,8%, according to the Central Election Commission.
