Sokhumi Denies Deployment of New Armament in Gudauta

Defense Minister of breakaway Abkhazia Sultan Sosnaliev denied reports that Russia has delivered additional armament to the Gudauta military base, Apsnypress news agency reported on July 7.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said in Washington on July 6 that the Russian military base in Gudauta received additional armament, according to RIA Novosti news agency.

?This information is not true. Mikheil Saakashvili can fabricate anything he wants,? Sultan Sosnaliev said in the interview with Apsnypress news agency on July 7.

Russia claims that it closed down its military base in Gudauta in 2001 as envisaged by the OSCE Istanbul treaty and currently only 4 helicopters and 130 Russian servicemen belonging to the peacekeeping forces are deployed there.

But Georgia casts doubts over this claim and wants to launch regular international monitoring of the base.
