Moscow Against Discussion of ‘Frozen Conflicts’ at G8 Ministerial
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kaminin said on June 22 that discussion of “frozen conflicts” at the G8 foreign ministerial meeting, scheduled in Moscow for June 29, without participation parties involved “will hardly be productive.”
“There is no ‘forbidden issues’ for us. On the other hand we deem it more reasonable to limit agenda of the G8 with only those issues on which agreement is possible,” Kaminin said in an interview with the Interfax news agency.
“At the same time, overloaded working agenda of the G8 will hardly enable to further complicate it with [discussions of] specific conflict issues,” he added.
“Moreover, discussion of sensitive and delicate issues like conflicts on post-Soviet space without participation of parties involved [in these conflicts] will hardly be productive,” Kaminin said.
He also noted that it is of every party’s interest to move forward in respect of the Abkhaz and South Ossetian conflict resolution process in frames of existing negotiating mechanisms.
