U.S. Diplomats Meet Abkhaz Leader

U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Matthew Bryza and U.S. Ambassador to Georgia John Tefft held talks with Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh and Foreign Minister of breakaway region Sergey Shamba in Sokhumi on June 19.

Matthew Bryza noted after talks that the U.S. diplomats have listened to constrictive proposals, Abkhaz news agency Apsnipress reported.

According to this report, Bryza also said that both Tbilisi?s and Sokhumi?s proposals give reason to think that a common language can be found between the sides. He noted that there is willingness to make a progress in the conflict resolution process both in Tbilisi and Sokhumi, Apsnipress reported.

Bryza also said, according to Apsnipress, that economic ties between Abkhazia and Europe will only be welcomed.

This is Bryza?s second visit to Abkhazia in less than one month. In late May the U.S. official traveled to Sokhumi as member of the high-level delegation of the UN Secretary General?s Group of Friends.
