Russia Hails Donors Conference for South Ossetia

In a statement issued on June 15 the Russian Foreign Ministry described the donors conference for the economic and infrastructure rehabilitation in the South Ossetian conflict zone, which was held in Brussels on June 14, as ?timely and very important.?

Donor countries from the OSCE pledged more than EUR 10 million for economic and infrastructure rehabilitation in the South Ossetian conflict zone at the conference.

The Russian side also welcomed the role of OSCE and its Belgian Chairmanship for organizing and holding this international forum.

?During its address the Russian side stressed the importance of joint efforts directed at restoring the economy in South Ossetia, which will promote confidence building between the Georgian and South Ossetian sides and advance the peace process for conflict resolution,? the Russian Foreign Ministry said, adding that Russia had proposed Moscow as a venue for future meetings.

The Russian side said during the conference that it is going to support the economic development of the region with the equivalent of about three million euros. Russia foresees the possibility that part of this amount would be allocated to specific projects coordinated with the OSCE, including those contained in the package proposals.
