U.S. Reaffirms Support for S. Ossetia Rehabilitation Process

In a statement issued on June 14 the U.S. Department of State reiterated that the United States pledged USD 2 million for economic and infrastructure rehabilitation in the South Ossetian conflict zone at a donors conference in Brussels on June 14.

?We welcome the solidarity of the international community in reaffirming its support for Georgia?s territorial integrity. The United States intends to build on this cooperation with our international partners, including the Georgian Government, the European Union, Russia, other G-8 countries, and all OSCE member states to achieve a just and lasting political settlement that affords South Ossetia significant autonomy within a unified Georgia,? the statement reads.

Donor countries from the OSCE pledged more than EUR 10 million for the economic and infrastructure rehabilitation in the South Ossetian conflict zone at the conference in Brussels.

The list of package proposals on rehabilitation projects was put together based on a needs assessment study carried out in 2005-2006 by international, Georgian and South Ossetian experts.
