Ombudsman Says Findings on Prison Incident ‘Scandalous’
Public Defender Sozar Subari said on June 11 he is convinced that prison officials are to blame for the March 27 incident in prison number five in Tbilisi, which resulted in the death of seven inmates.
“I have listened to the position of Bacho Akhalaia [Chief of the Penitentiary system] about the developments in the prison [on March 27] and I have also listened to testimonies of many inmates and I have reason to believe more of what the inmates are saying,” Sozar Subari said during a talk show aired by the Imedi television on June 11.
He said that the Public Defender’s Office is carrying out “an alternative investigation” of the incident “and conclusions will be unveiled, I think, in a week or so.”
“The findings of this investigation will be a reason for another scandal,” Subari added.
