Latvia Calls on NATO to Enhance Ties with Georgia, Ukraine

Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga called on the NATO member states to formulate a concrete form of cooperation with Georgia and Ukraine at the Riga summit in November.
 
She was speaking at a joint session of the United States Congress in Washington on June 7. A full transcript of her address was posted by the Latvian President?s official web site


?Latvia supports Ukraine and Georgia in their endeavors to establish closer relations with NATO. We encourage the member states of the alliance to formulate concrete and enhanced forms of cooperation between NATO and these two countries at the Riga summit [of the alliance]. We firmly believe that an open door policy must be maintained for the admittance of future member states,” the Latvian President said.


Vaira Vike-Freiberga also stressed that Latvia stands ready to develop a friendly, future-oriented and pragmatic relationship with Russia ?as an important neighbor of the EU and of NATO.?
