Tbilisi Concerned over Moscow’s Statement on Self-Determination
Georgia has strongly condemned the Russian Foreign Ministry’s June 1 statement regarding breakaway South Ossetia and said that Moscow fails to act as a mediator in the conflict.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in an information note issued on June 1 that while Russia respects the principle of territorial integrity, the principle of the right of self-determination should also be respected in the process of South Ossetian conflict resolution.
“Speculations regarding the self-determination principle pose a threat to its [Russia’s] territorial integrity itself against the background of Russia’s historic experience,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued on June 1.
