MPs to Discuss New Rule of Composition of Justice Council

The Georgian Parliament plans to discuss a proposal to change a rule on composing the Justice Council, which is in charge of overseeing the judicial system?s performance.

According to the proposed amendments, the General Prosecutor will no longer have a seat in the Council.

There will be a total of 19 members in the Council. Five will be elected by the Parliament (four of them should be lawmakers) and two will be appointed by the President. The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Legal Issues will automatically be granted a seat on the Council, as well as the Justice Minister and Chairman of the Supreme Court. The remaining 9 seats will be occupied by judges.

The current Justice Council has been criticized by opponents as being a tool to mount pressure on judges.
