UN Envoy Meets Abkhaz Leader

The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative to Georgia Heidi Tagliavini met with Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh in Sokhumi, the Abkhaz news agency Apsnypress reported on April 11.

The possibility of restoring the Georgian-Abkhaz Coordination Council was discussed during the meeting, according to the report.

The restoration of the Council, which last gathered in January, 2001, was agreed upon during Georgian presidential advisor Irakli Alasania’s visit to Sokhumi on March 29. The Georgian side sees the Council as a mean to foster direct Georgian-Abkhaz talks.
