Georgian Chief Negotiator, Russian Envoy Discuss S.Ossetia

Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Giorgi Khaindrava and Russian Ambassador to Georgia Vladimir Chkhikvishvili discussed the results of the recent session of the quadripartite Joint Control Commission (JCC), which was held in Vladikavkaz on March 27-29.

During the session the sides agreed to set up a 10-member working group to develop a joint action plan for the peaceful resolution of the South Ossetian conflict.

Giorgi Khaindrava said that in the near future the sides will select their candidates to comprise this working group. The final composition and further activities of the group will be discussed at the next session of the JCC, scheduled for late April in Tskhinvali, Khaindrava added.

?This working group will coordinate different positions. There is a peace plan [prepared by Tbilisi], which has been approved by the entire world and there are [South Ossetian leader Eduard] Kokoity?s initiatives… 75% of positions in both documents are identical,? Khaindrava told reporters after his talks with the Russian Ambassador.

Vladimir Chkhikvishvili said that relevant steps have been taken to defuse the tensions and settle the problems in the conflict zone.

?Now, the most important thing is to implement those agreements which have been reached there [in Vladikavkaz],? he said.

The Georgian State Minister warned that if the implementation of ?a minimum? of agreed issues are hampered and Russia – as a guarantor of implementing these agreements – does not take positive steps in this regard, ?continuation of activities within the framework of the JCC will lose all sense.?

He also said that Tbilisi wants to see immediate results ?not in the course of years and months but in only weeks so that we should have something by the next session of the JCC, in late April.?
