Reports: Russia Blocks Georgia from UN Abkhazia Discussion

At a closed-door session on March 28, the UN Security Council discussed a text of the resolution on Abkhazia, but the Georgian envoy was blocked by the Russian side from attending these discussions, diplomatic sources in New York said.

Georgian Ambassador to the UN Revaz Adamia plans to convene a news conference in New York over this issue on March 28.

On January 31, the UN Security Council adopted a truncated text of the resolution simply extending the mandate of the UN Observer Mission in Georgia for two extra months, until March 31, 2006. The texts of the previous resolutions, along with the extension of the UNOMIG mandate, always reaffirmed support for Georgia’s territorial integrity.

It is not yet clear whether the new resolution will be similar to the January 31, 2006 resolution or not. Reportedly, consultations on the text of the resolution will continue until March 30, when a formal approval of the text should take place at the Security Council session.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan called on the Security Council on March 24 to extend the UNOMIG mandate for six months, until September 30, 2006.
