Georgia Condemns Taiwan’s Plans to Scrap Unification Council
In a statement issued on March 2 the Georgian Foreign Ministry said it is “deeply concerned” over a decision by Taiwan in late February to shut down the National Unification Council, which was set up in 1990 to oversee the island’s eventual unification with China.
“Such a step does not contribute to the further development of a constructive dialogue across the Taiwan Straits. Georgia, as well as China, is confronted with the problem of separatism and the two states are permanently cooperating very closely in solving this problem. Georgia regards Taiwan as an inseparable part of China and will continue to support every initiative and effort of the People’s Republic of China towards a peaceful reunification of the country,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry stated.
On 22 February Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues Giorgi Khaindrava met with Chinese Ambassador to Georgia and discussed issues related with the Abkhaz and South Ossetian conflict resolution.
