Power Supply Limited in Tbilisi

Electricity is still rationed in the capital Tbilisi and a revolving timetable has been imposed so that every district could have some power, officials from the Telasi, company distributing electricity in Tbilisi, said on January 28.

Energy crisis worsened in Georgia after a heavy snowfall and storm damaged high-voltage power line in western Georgia on January 26, amid persisting gas shortage.

According to the Energy Ministry, efforts are underway to restore damaged “Imereti” power line, which transports electricity from western Georgia to eastern part of the country.

Reportedly, it will take at least four days more to restore the power line.

Restoration of the 9th power generator in Gardabani is also underway. The vital power generator was damaged as a result of an emergency shutdown on January 26.

Officials say that restoration of the 9th power generator is expected to finish later on January 28 but will be put into operation only after the Iranian gas reaches Georgia. Power generated by this facility will significantly improve electricity supply to the consumers in Tbilisi.

Currently existing limited supply of electricity in Tbilisi is secured through import of 50 megawatts of electricity from Azerbaijan, while 80 megawatts are being produced by the 4th power generator, which was put into operation on January 26. The rest is generated by local hydro power plants in eastern Georgia.
