Energy Minister Comments on Visit to Iran

Energy Minister Nika Gilauri, who paid a working visit to Iran last week, said on Tuesday that an agreement on a mutual supply of electricity between Iran and Georgia has been reached. He also said that there are prospects of Iran becoming Georgia?s alternative gas supplier.

?I had a very positive meetings with the Iranian Energy, Gas and Oil Ministers, as well as the Foreign Minister. We have signed a memorandum with my Iranian counterpart on an exchange of electricity, meaning that during the summer period we will supply electricity to Iran and in winter we will import electricity from Iran,? Gilauri said at a news conference.

The Minister also said that he can not say anything ?concrete? about a possible cooperation with Iran on gas supply issues.

?It was the first step to negotiate with the Iranian new administration so I will refrain from making any concrete statements. But I can say that there is a theoretical, practical, as well as real a possibility that Iran can become a supplier of an alternative source of energy to Georgia,? he added.
