Bush Hails Advance of Religious Freedom in Georgia

U.S. President George W. Bush praised progress made by a number of countries, including Georgia, in advancing religious freedom. In a proclamation released by the White House on January 13 President Bush designated January 16 as Religious Freedom Day.

?We are working to advance freedom of religion abroad … In recent years, we have seen important progress, including in Vietnam, Laos, India, Georgia, and the United Arab Emirates? By helping to secure the religious freedom of people in other countries, we promote the spread of liberty and human dignity,? the proclamation reads.

According to the 2005 International Religious Freedom Report issued by the U.S. Department of State on November 8, the status of religious freedom has improved in Georgia, but the report also notes that ?local harassment, both verbal and physical, of nontraditional minority religions continued.?
