Bagapsh Comments on Treaty on Non-Resumption of Hostilities

Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh said that the Abkhaz side will not sign an agreement on non-resumption of hostilities in case the Georgian side will further put forth amendments in the document, Apsnipress news agency reported on December 28.

Bagapsh said that during visit of Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolutions Giorgi Khaindrava in Sokhumi on December 6-7 the sides agreed text of the document. ?But despite this [agreement], we still hear from Tbilisi about necessity to introduce some amendments to the agreement, but we are categorically against of this,? Bagapsh said.

Although the Abkhaz leader did not specify details of proposed amendments, he said that the agreement ?will mean nothing? if Russia and the UN do not play as guarantors of this agreement on non-resumption of hostilities.

?But participation of the Russian Federation, presence of its peacekeeping forces in the conflict zone, which is the Abkhaz side?s demand, triggers negative reaction of the Georgian side,? Sergey Bagapsh said.

Bagapsh also said that he can meet President Saakashvili only after the agreement is signed between the two sides.

According to the Apsnipress, the draft agreement between the Abkhaz and Georgian sides envisages that the UN Security Council will take measures in case there is a threat of resumption of military confrontation.
