Georgian Orthodox Church Slams Ombudsman

Bishop Zenon of Dmanisi, an influential Orthodox official, criticized Georgian Ombudsman Sozar Subari for his recent statement in the Parliament, according to which the Concordat signed between the Orthodox Church and the Georgian State in 2002 violates principle of equality recognized by the Georgian constitution and the international conventions.

?This is an unserious statement. Besides the fact that this is a [constitutional] agreement between the State and the Church, it also reflects the interests of the Georgian nation … Rejection of this agreement is equal to rejection of national interests,? Bishop Zenon told Imedi television on December 24.

In his report to the Parliament on December 23 Sozar Subari noted that the Concordat signed between the Orthodox Church and the Georgian State in 2002, violates principle of equality recognized both by the Georgian Constitution and the international conventions, because the Concordat gives important privileges to the Orthodox Church compared with other religious groups in Georgia.
