Ombudsman Faces Tough Parliamentary Hearing

Georgian Public Defender Sozar Subari will present at the parliamentary session on December 22 his report about the human rights situation in the country.

At the preliminary hearings held with the parliamentary factions, the report has already been criticized by opposition lawmakers as ?an inadequate assessment? of the situation.

During the meeting with members from the Democratic Front opposition faction, Sozar Subari was also criticized his staff policy and accused of turning a blind eye on many irregularities practiced by the law enforcement agencies.

?Sozar Subari?s first deputy [Bacho Akhalaia] is a brother of [Data Akhalaia] the chief of constitutional security department [at the Ministry of Internal Affairs] and son of prosecutor of Samegrelo region. Of course the Public Defender?s office will not be able to adequately probe into irregularities in these agencies,? MP Davit Zurabishvili, the leader of Democratic Front faction, said on December 22.
