Georgian MFA Protests Shootout in Abkhaz Conflict Zone

The Georgian Foreign Ministry expressed protest regarding the recent incident when unknown attackers opened fire in the direction of a Georgian village of Orsantia in the Zugdidi region, and urged the UN Observers Mission in Georgia to take respective measures in order to explore the ongoing developments in the Gali district.

According to the Georgian Foreign Ministry, on December 21 unknown attackers “from the so-called Abkhazian militia checkpoint” stationed illegally in the vicinity of Russian peacekeeping checkpoint in the village of Otobaia, Gali district, opened rifle at the checkpoint of the Georgian troops in the village of Orsantia. The shootout, which lasted for about 20-25 minutes, caused no casualties.

“Within past two weeks this is the third case of opening fire by the so-called Abkhazian militia from the place of deployment of the Russian peacekeeping forces in the direction of the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs” forces, which, regrettably, has so far drawn no response from the “peacekeepers”, who, in many cases, are reported of having aided separatists in their illegal activity,” the statement issued by the Georgian Foreign Ministry on December 21 reads.
