Bagapsh Ready for Talks with Saakashvili

President of breakaway Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh, who is currently visiting Russia, said that he is ready to meet with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili as soon as the agreement on non-resumption of hostilities and security guarantees between Tbilisi and Sokhumi is ready.

?I do not rule out that I will meet with Mikheil Saakashvili by the end of this year, however initially signing of the document was planned at the beginning of 2006,? Sergey Bagapsh told news agency RIA Novosti on December 15.

The Georgian President?s representative for Abkhaz conflict issues Irakli Alasania, who also chairs the Tbilisi-based Abkhaz government-in-exile, said on December 14 that President Saakashvili is ready to hold talks with Sergey Bagapsh at any time, without any preconditions, and sign a mutually acceptable document.

The Abkhaz leader said that the talks ?will be held on a neutral territory, probably in Geneva.?

He noted that besides signing the agreement, which has actually been agreed between the sides, there are numerous issues to be discussed with the Georgian side, ?such as humanitarian issues, economic development, the situation in the Gali district [of breakaway Abkhazia], restoration of the Inguri hydro power plant and other issues,? Bagapsh added.
