Opposition MP Accuses Ombudsman of Double Standards

Koka Guntsadze, MP from the opposition parliamentary faction Rightist Opposition, accused Georgian Ombudsman Sozar Subari of practicing double standards on December 15.

The Ombudsman presented a report on alleged human rights violations in the country to the Parliamentary Committee for Human Rights on December 15.

Sozar Subari claimed that compared with previous years the facts of human rights violations have significantly decreased, adding that the situation is still difficult in the penal and judiciary systems.

Koka Guntsadze described Subari?s report as ?inadequate.? He said that the report neglected such themes as the Financial Police and human rights violations by police, as well as pressure on the media.

?The Ombudsman?s Office has become a supplement to the Interior Ministry,? the opposition MP said.

However, the Georgian Ombudsman denied these accusations as groundless.
