Judiciary Tops Georgia’s List of Corrupt Institutions

The Judiciary is considered to be the most corrupt institution in Georgia, followed by Customs and Political Parties, Transparency International (TI) said in a recent report.

The 2005 Global Corruption Barometer (GCB), based on a Gallup International survey conducted on behalf of TI was published on December 9 for International Anti-Corruption Day 2005.

According to the GCB, 51% of Georgians surveyed in 2005 identified the judiciary system as “the most problematic sector.”

The customs service comes in second with 37%, followed by political parties with 36%; the tax administration – 35%; medical service 31%; the Parliament – 31%; business/private sector – 27%.

In comparison with the results from last year’s GCB survey, significant improvement was seen in perceptions of Police, which had previously been identified as the most corrupt institution. Improvements were cited in the licensing and education sectors as well.
