Burjanadze Details Position on CIS
Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said that Georgia should be very cautious and thoroughly consider before taking decision on withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). She also warned that this withdrawal might cause negative economic consequences for Georgia.
?This should not be an emotional decision. Withdrawal from CIS might bring some economic problems, including problems related with export of our products to the Russian market… On the other hand, the not only the authorities, but the opposition should be ready to share responsibility for possible negative consequences [of withdrawal from CIS],? Nino Burjanadze said, while speaking in a political talks show at Imedi television.
?This must happen only in case if it brings advantage for us, but this should not happen only because that this move will bring some political dividends to certain political forces,? she added.
Earlier on November 22, Nino Burjanadze said that ?a proposal to launch considerations over our withdrawal from the CIS is absolutely acceptable. But I think that we [parliamentary majority] will need some additional consultations, including with the President over this issue.?
Burjanadze?s this statement at the parliamentary session followed a proposal voiced by opposition parliamentarian from the Republican Party Davit Berdzenishvili, who requested MPs from the ruling National Movement party to launch consideration over the country?s pull out from the CIS.
