Opposition Rejects ‘National Consensus’ Document

Opposition political parties have expressed skepticism and some of them have rejected to sign a President-proposed document on a National Consensus, which outlines the major priorities of the country’s development which are thought to be universally accepted by all political forces.

The document outlines the country’s territorial integrity, Euro-Atlantic aspirations, human rights and other issues as top priorities.

But as MP Levan Berdzenishvili of the opposition Republican Party said this document can not be regarded as a consensus paper, because it was drafted solely by one political force. “Real consensus means dialogue; if we really want to draft this kind of document then we should gather and discuss what kind of document we want to approve,” MP Berdzenishvili told Imedi television on November 21.

“This document speaks of human rights and rule of law, but it is cynical for this government to speak about these values,” MP Kakha Kukava of the Conservative Party said.

“We will agree to sign this document if there will be a provision envisaging the resignation of President Saakashvili and dissolving the Parliament,” leader of the Labor Party Shalva Natelashvili said.
