Tbilisi Protests Opening of Abkhaz Checkpoint in Gali
The Georgian Foreign Ministry expressed protest over the Abkhaz side?s decision to open a checkpoint in the Georgian village of Nabakevi in the breakaway region?s Gali district, which is in the security zone monitored by the Russian peacekeeping forces.
According to the Georgian side the checkpoint, which is manned by 15-20 militias, has been installed just 30 meters from the Russian peacekeepers? checkpoint.
?This fact provides more tangible proof that the Abkhazian separatist regime continues to run its usual course of arbritriness [sic], opening up illegal checkpoints, recruiting armed groupings and enforcing punitive measures against the local Georgian population. It all takes place in the presence, and with the backing of, the Russian peacekeeping contingent, which cannot fail to stir up a righteous indignation,? the statement issued by the Georgian Foreign Ministry on November 18 reads.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia called on the UN Secretary General?s Special Representative for Georgia and the Commander of the CIS peacekeeping forces to take measures in order to put an end to illegal acts in the security zone.
