Georgia Tries to Focus Attention of ‘Group of Friends’ on Gali
Georgia called on the UN Secretary General’s Group of Friends – France, Germany, Russia, UK, USA – “to pursue a consistent policy in order to give a relevant assessment to each violation of human rights” cases that have taken place in breakaway Abkhazia’s Gali district, which is predominantly populated by ethnic Georgians.
Georgian Foreign Minister Gela Bezhuashvili and Chairman of the Tbilisi-based Abkhaz government-in-exile Irakli Alasania met on November 17 with Ambassadors of the Group of Friends accredited in Tbilisi. These talks were also attended by UN Secretary General’s special representative to Georgia Heidi Tagliavini.
“During the meeting the sides put special emphasis on the recently complicated situation in Abkhazia: mass cases of violations of human rights, attacks on the peaceful population, kidnappings and murders taking place in the zone controlled by the Russian peace-keeping forces, often in their presence,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry reported.
