Georgian Soldiers Injured in Iraq

The Georgian Ministry of Defense (MoD) confirmed on November 9 that four Georgian servicemen were injured after an explosive went off in the Iraqi city of Baquba, roughly 200 kilometers northeast of Bagdhad, on November 7.

According to the MoD, the soldiers, whose injuries are not life-threatening, are from the 1st Light Infantry Brigade.

The Georgian soldiers were injured when their vehicle hit a landmine while patrolling the city late on November 7.

A total of 12 Georgian servicemen have been injured in Iraq since August, 2003, when Georgia first started to contribute to coalition forces there.

Currently, Georgia has about 850 of its elite troops in Iraq and represents one of the most significant contributors to the coalition forces in terms of a country’s per capita troop deployment.
