Georgia Plans to Increase Armed Forces
The Georgian Parliament discussed a draft law on November 8 which will enable the Georgian Ministry of Defense (MoD) and the Border Guard Department (BGD, which is under the Interior Ministry?s subordination) to increase the number of their servicemen to 31,868. The current law says that a total number of servicemen in both the MoD and BGD shall not exceed 29,703.
According to the new draft law, the number of the Defense Ministry?s armed forces shall not exceed 26 thousand people, while the number of border troops ? 5,868.
Currently, the number of MoD troops is 21,468, according to official information.
