Adjara’s Ex-Leader Appeals ECHR
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has registered the application lodged by Aslan Abashidze, former Head of Adjara Autonomous Republic, but no decision has yet been made by the ECHR on the admissibility of the case.
Aslan Abashidze claims that his assets were illegally confiscated by the Georgian authorities after he was ousted as a result of peaceful revolution in Adjara last May.
The court in Georgia ruled in favor of an appeal by the prosecutor’s office to confiscate the assets of the ex-Adjarian leader and some 30 of his relatives. The assets, including real estate, land, luxurious cars and bank accounts, were estimated at around 100 million Lari (approximately USD 58 million).
Charges against Abashidze were brought by the Georgian authorities on the basis of an anti-corruption law, passed by the Parliament last February. The law envisages confiscation of assets of those officials and ex-officials who fail to prove that their assets were acquired legally.
