Soldiers Go AWOL in Eastern Georgia

10 servicemen went AWOL from their military unit in the Dedoplistskaro district in eastern Georgia, citing abuse from officers and other servicemen, as well as poor social conditions in the military unit. All the 10 servicemen are ethnic Azerbaijanis.

The servicemen, who are currently being interrogated by investigators in the Military Police, have already applied to the Georgian Public Defender?s Office for assistance.

According to the Public Defender?s Office, if the facts of abuse are confirmed, Ombudsman Sozar Subari will request the Defense Ministry to take measure against those officers who are suspected of abusing the servicemen.
