Paper Speculates on Structural Changes in Government
The Georgian daily Rezonansi (Resonance) reported on August 6 that the authorities plan to separate the Security Service from the Interior Ministry in September. No official confirmation of this information has come yet.
The Interior and Security Ministries were merged last December. The united ministry has been led by Vano Merabishvili since then.
According to Rezonansi, Merabishvili will chair the Security Service after the latter separates from the Interior Ministry. The paper reports that influential parliamentarian from the ruling National Movement Party Givi Targamadze is said to be the leading candidate for Interior Minister. Givi Targamadze currently chairs the Parliamentary Committee for Defense and Security.
