Second Russian Military Convoy Leaves Georgia

A convoy of 11 Russian military vehicles crossed Georgia’s northern border and moved into Russia on August 3, announced Deputy Commander of the Headquarters of the Russian Troops in the Trans Caucasus Col. Vladimir Kuparadze, as quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency.


This is the second military convoy to leave Georgia as a part of the Russian military bases? withdrawal process. These vehicles belonged to the Headquarters of the Russian Troops in the Trans Caucasus in Tbilisi. The first convoy of military vehicles from the Batumi military base left the country on August 1.


Col. Kuparadze said that a convoy of 9 military vehicles is scheduled to leave the Akhalkalaki military base on August 5. He also said that Russian amphibious ship will withdraw military hardware from the Batumi base on August 8.


According to an agreement reached by the Georgian and Russian Foreign Ministers in Moscow on May 30, at least 40 armored vehicles, including no less than 20 tanks, are to be withdrawn from the bases in Batumi and Akhalkalaki by September 1, 2005. The entire withdrawal process should be finished by 2008.
