Newspaper Speculates on Possible Cabinet Reshuffle

In an article published on August 3, the Georgian daily Rezonansi (Resonance) speculated about a possible reshuffle of the Cabinet of Ministers and the replacement of current Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli with Vice-Speaker of the Parliament Mikheil Machavariani.

?Representatives of the ruling [National Movement] party do not confirm this information in official comments, but in informal conversations they do not rule out the possibility of such changes,? Rezonansi writes.

The paper says that Machavariani has proved himself “a reliable member of President Saakashvili?s team.” But the newspaper does not specify the reasons that might lead to Nogaideli?s dismissal.

Rezonansi claims that should such a reshuffle take place, current Deputy Interior Minister Bidzina Bregadze, who is running for Tbilisi?s Isani district’s majoritarian (single-mandate constituency) seat in the coming parliamentary by-elections, might take over the position of vice-speaker, replacing Machavariani.

According to Rezonansi there has been speculation about structural changes in the government as well, which might involve a merger of the Agriculture and Environment Ministries.
