Tbilisi Urges Moscow to Cooperate in Capturing Terrorist Suspects
In a statement issued on July 27 the Georgian Foreign Ministry urged Russia to assist Georgia in capturing those persons who are suspected in carrying out series of terrorist acts in Georgia?s Shida Karti region in 2004.
?Persons who have carried out terrorist act in Gori on February 1, 2005 have already been arrested. Identities of other members of a sabotage squad, who carried out series of terrorist acts in Georgia in autumn, 2004, are also known. According to the information of Georgian special services this sabotage squad underwent training on the territory of the Russian Federation. The information has been handed over to the Russian officials,? the statement by the Georgian Foreign Ministry reads.
According to the Georgian Interior Ministry this group of saboteurs is suspected of carrying out several sabotages in Shida Kartli region last year, including explosion of high-voltage power line Kartli II in October, 2004; explosion of two towers of power lines in October 2004; explosion of a railway in Kaspi district in October 2004 and explosion of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline’s radio transmission station in Khashuri district in November, 2004.
?The Georgian side expresses hope that the Russia?s relevant structures will render assistance to the Georgian counterparts in capturing these persons,? the Georgian Foreign Ministry stated.
?The Georgian Foreign Ministry also deems it necessary to state that Georgia is not interested in confrontation and in aggravation of situation in Tskhinvali Region [breakaway South Ossetia], as well as in fueling tensions in Russo-Georgian relations. Georgia is ready for cooperation and expects adequate steps from the Russian side,? the statement reads.
