Annan Reports on Situation in Abkhazia

In his recent report on the situation in the Abkhaz conflict zone, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged the Georgian side to be forthcoming in meeting Abkhaz security concerns and called on the Abkhaz side to accept the deployment of the UN Mission?s civilian police officers in the Gali district and to open a human rights office in this predominately Georgian-populated district.


The UN Secretary-General also urged the Abkhaz side to allow for the teaching of local youth in their native Georgian language.


Kofi Annan recommended an extension of the mandate of the 10-year-old UN Observers? Mission in Georgia until 31 January 2006.


He also said in the report to the UN Security Council that only “genuine commitment” by both sides will lead to a lasting political settlement of the conflict.
