Nationwide Exams Launched in Georgia

About 32 thousand would-be students will participate in nationwide entry exams being conducted throughout Georgia, starting from July 11 and lasting until July 21. The final results of the examinations will be announced on August 20.

According to the new Education Law, all potential students willing to be enrolled in a higher education center have to pass standardized nationwide tests, which, according to the Education Ministry, rules out any possibility of corrupt transactions between the universities? administrations and would-be students.

?The epoch of corruption has ended in the educational system of Georgia. The time has come when hard work and learning is the only way out,? President Saakashvili said on July 11.

This new rule of entry exams, according to the Education Ministry, aims at rooting out corruption which has been widespread in the Georgian education system for many years.

The sealed envelopes with tests were opened today in the presence of the would-be students. Each test is evaluated through a 100 point system. The potential students will have to pass three entry exams ? in Georgian language and literature, foreign language and general skills.

In order to ensure that impartial and transparent examinations are held, special observers are involved in the proccess.

Each testing center has been equipped with TV sets to let relatives and parents observe the test-takers in action.

The tests will be evaluated independently, at least twice, according to a uniform scheme of evaluation. A special media center has been set up to provide interested parties information regarding the course of the examinations.
