IAEA Mission to Search for Missing Fissile Materials in Georgia

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will send a team of inspectors to Georgia to search for bomb-grade fissile materials, reportedly lost in the country, Reuters reported on June 15.

An unnamed diplomat close to the IAEA told Reuters that the UN nuclear watchdog also wants to send a mission to Georgia?s breakaway region of Abkhazia to find any weapons-grade plutonium or highly enriched uranium that may have gone missing from a nuclear institute in Abkhazia. There are concerns that about 9 kg of plutonium may be missing, according to this report.

The exact date of the IAEA mission?s arrival in Georgia is not known yet. The dispatching of a team of inspectors to Abkhazia may take longer, as extra security arrangements are involved.
