Abkhaz, S.Ossetian Leaders Advocate Closer Ties with Russia
In a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, President of breakaway Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh stressed that the Abkhaz people are ?unanimous in [their] aspirations to establish the closest ties with prospering Russia,? Apsnipress news agency reported.
The message was sent to congratulate the country on Russia Day, formerly known as Independence Day, which marks the Russian Parliament’s June 12, 1990 declaration of sovereignty from the Soviet Union.
?These [close] relations with great Russia represent a guarantee of security and economic development of our Republic [Abkhazia],? Sergey Bagapsh said in the message.
In his congratulatory message, South Ossetian leader Eduard Kokoity said that the South Ossetian people, an ?overwhelming majority of which are Russian citizens,? consider ?great Russia as the major guarantor of peace and security in the Caucasus,? the Press and Information Committee of South Ossetia reported.
