UN Envoy Briefs Georgian State Minister on Sokhumi Visit
UN Secretary General?s Special Representatives to Georgia Heidi Tagliavini held talks with Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues Goga Khaindrava on June 8.
The UN Envoy briefed the State Minister over her recent talks with Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh in Sokhumi on June 6.
Heidi Tagliavini said that the Abkhaz de facto authorities are ready to discuss the issue of the return of internally displaced persons to Abkhazia. ?Now, most important is to discuss the security issue,? she added.
Goga Khaindrava stressed the importance of the return of the internally displaced persons to the region and the restoration of the Russian-Georgian railway via Abkhazia.
These issues will be discussed during the forthcoming Georgian-Abkhaz talks in Moscow on June 15-16.
Heidi Tagliavini also spoke about the issue of opening a UN human rights office in the predominately Georgian-populated district of Gali. This issue was pushed during her talks with Sergey Bagapsh.
?Bagapsh claims that there is no necessity to open a UN human rights office in Gali since the Abkhaz law enforcement agencies are themselves trying to protect the population in Gali,? Tagliavini said.
