Tbilisi, Moscow Hold ‘Intensive’ Talks over Agreement on Bases

Representatives of the Russian and Georgian Foreign Ministries held talks over finalizing an Agreement on Timeframe, Mode of Functioning and Withdrawal of the Russian Military Bases from Georgia on May 31-June 1 in Moscow.


Signing of this agreement by the two countries is envisaged by the joint declaration signed by the Georgian and Russian Foreign Ministers in Moscow on May 30. According to this joint declaration Russia committed to withdraw its bases from Batumi and Akhalkalaki in the course of 2008.


According to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s information note issued on June 2, the sides agreed to continue “intensive work” over draft of this agreement.


The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed hope that, this document will also outline prospect of creation of the Russo-Georgian anti-terrorist center, which is also envisaged by the joint declaration signed on May 30.
