President Nominates CEC Chairman, Members

President Saakashvili nominated on May 30 Gia Kavtaradze, who previously worked in Georgia?s Council of Justice, as the Chairman of Central Election Commission. The President has also submitted list of 12 nominees for CEC membership to the Parliament for consideration.

According to the new rule of composition of the CEC, the Parliament will have to select six out of these 12 nominees to fill the 7-member CEC.

A short-list of 12 persons, plus Chairmanship nomination, was made after a total of 515 applicants applied to participate in a contest which was announced by the authorities on May 11.
