Soros Meets Georgian Leadership

Visiting founder and chairman of the Open Society Institute, George Soros met with Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli in Tbilisi on May 30. Reportedly, Soros has also met with President Mikheil Saakashvili.


George Soros, who arrived in Georgia on May 29, will participate in a 10-year anniversary of opening Open Society Institute office in Tbilisi. During the visit he will also meet with representatives of the Georgian media and civil society organizations.


A small group of activists from the opposition Labor Party held a protest rally outside the office of the Open Society Institute ? Georga Foundation on May 30. Protesters carried banners ?Soros ? Go and Take Your Government? making a reference to the Georgian cabinet members, which as claimed by Labor Party is ?fully controlled? by the billionaire philanthropist. Soros announced last year that he will contribute USD 1 million to finance specially set up fund designed for Georgian officials? salaries.


Another group of protesters, who describe themselves as supporters of late Georgian President Zviad Gamsakhurdia, threw eggs at Soros car, while the latter was moving out of the hotel in Tbilisi on May 30.

George Soros will brief reporters about his visit to Georgia at a news conference on May 31.
