Russian MFA Comments on Talks over Military Bases
The Russian Foreign Ministry reported on May 25 that the Russian and Georgian sides could negotiate on most of the part of a joint statement, which will be signed by the Presidents of two countries after a final agreement is be reached over withdrawal of Russian military bases from Georgia.
?[The sides] have discussed in details issues related to timeframe and terms of functioning and withdrawal of Russian military bases stationed in Georgia, as well as current life-support issues for the Russian servicemen? As a result [of these talks], over the most of these issues it was possible to find mutually acceptable formulation of a joint statement of Russian and Georgian Presidents,? the Russian Foreign Ministry?s information note reads.
Talks between the officials from the Georgian and Russian Foreign Ministry were held in Tbilisi on May 23-24. The both sides cited progress, but admitted that no final date of bases? withdrawal is yet agreed.
?Remaining unsolved issues will become the subject of further political dialogue,? the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.
