GUAM Concerned over Andizhan Bloodshed
Ukrainian Ambassador Vladimir Yelchenko made a statement on behalf of GUAM member states (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Moldova) on May 20 and said that all four countries are concerned that ?aggravation of situation in Uzbekistan has unfortunately led to the numerous casualties and sufferings among peaceful civilians.? Hundreds were reportedly killed after the bloodshed in Uzbek city of Andizhan.
?The GUAM urges all parties to show restraint, refrain from using force and seek peaceful ways of settlement of the situation and hopes that solution to the problems will be found in conformity with the relevant provisions of the national legislation of Uzbekistan as well as international standards in the field of protection of human rights and rule of law,? the GUAM statement reads.
