Zhvania’s Brother Says Late PM was Killed

Goga Zhvania, brother of Georgia’s late Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania, said on a night talk show on Tbilisi-based 202 television on May 23 that he is “now sure” that his brother was assassinated. He dismissed the official version of Zhvania’s death, which says that late PM died of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a faulty gas heating devise, as “groundless.”

Goga Zhvania said that his statement is based on a private inquiry carried out by him.

“If previously I had only doubts about it, now I can say for sure that Zurab Zhvania became a victim of assassination. Everything will become clear and I am sure the case will be opened if the case is investigated professionally. I intend to see President Saakashvili and talk about it. I hope, and I am sure, that he [President Saakashvili] is really interested in finding out the truth about this case,” Goga Zhvania said.

Before this interview with Goga Zhvania, 202 TV station showed a 20-minute long journalistic investigation about the circumstances of Zhvania’s death. This piece of investigative reporting was mainly focused on the facts which contradict the official version.

Goga Zhvania said that his brother really died of carbon monoxide poisoning, but this poisoning was not caused by the faulty operation of a heating device, as claimed by the officials. He said that this was proved by an experiment which was held by the FBI experts. “The experiment showed that the heater worked perfectly,” Goga Zhvania added.

The Georgian General Prosecutor’s Office says that the official comment about the case will be made only after the official investigation of Zhvania’s death is over.
