Two Opposition Parties Formally Merge, Call Others to Unite
At an inaugural congress on May 23 the opposition Conservative Party, led by MP Koba Davitashvili and the Union of National Forces, led by MP Zviad Dzidziguri, officially announced a merger of their parties under the name of Conservative Party.
?We call on the opposition forces to unite? because the current situation in the country requires a strong and united opposition,? MP Koba Davitashvili, leader of the party said, while addressing the party?s congress.
Both Davitashvili and Dzidziguri were President Saakashvili?s allies but split from the ruling National Movement party last February because of controversial constitutional changes.
Currently, members from the Conservative Party occupy a total of seven seats in the Parliament and fall three seats short of the 10 necessary to create a parliamentary faction.
