Open Competition Announced for the CEC Posts
An open competition has been announced for the recruitment of members of the Central Election Commission (CEC), spokesman of the Georgian President Gela Charkviani said at a news briefing on May 11.
According to the amendments to the election code, approved by the Parliament on April 22, a shortlist of 17 people will be made after the pre-selection process. Then, the President will propose seven nominees from this list to the Parliament for approval.
Members of the CEC should not be affiliated with any political party, according to the law.
The President?s spokesman also said that a special group, chaired by Chief of the President?s Administration Gigi Ugulava, has been set up to consider applications.
This new rule for composing the CEC has been condemned by the opposition parties, as they fear that the new election commission will be under the ruling National Movement party?s control.
